The Devouring Forest Hub
The Oceans
The oceans were dangerous before the Devouring Forest overcame the land. Even when there were still other biomes, the continent was isolated, for the seas held horrors that, even now, with everything, the land still can't quite match.
Near the shoreline, it is possible to fish and to even sail a few kilometers out. Kelpies will make their way inland, and one might face a hippocampus in the sea, but both of these beasts are easy enough to deal with, at least compared to what else is out there.
Rare will things come closer to shore, wordless and terrible things of sizes incomprehensible. But their periodic visits, the glimpsed visage of a massive creature, and the remnants of shipwrecks both known and unknown are proof enough of their existance. They are things that land-dwellers cannot name, things of mass and strength and might.
Long, strangling tentacles. Eyes the size of cities. Scales as hard and sharp as diamond. These are the creatures of the ocean, and they are the masters of it as well. Other creatures whisper of them. Even the predatory kelpie fears these mighty beasts, and it is through the ocean creatures that can tolerate land and can be tolerated by land-dwellers that names of these ancient beasts may be known.
Kraken and dragon and leviathan: the rulers and slaughterers of all who do not show appropriate piety. The Devouring Forest itself could not stand to them, not when there are multiple and it is alone.
Those brave and daring towns who make their living off of fishing and ocean know they must give sacrifice to the sea, else one of those beasts will come close enough to be seen... and there will be no more town.
When stuck between a rock and a hard place, where do you go?
When even ocean creatures rush onto land to escape their tyrants, how can you escape your own?
